A poetry slam is a spoken word competition. Competing poets should come prepared with two pieces under 3 minutes in length, which will be judged by five randomly-chosen audience members. Each slam includes an open mic portion, and a feature performance by a professional poet, in addition to the competition. Signup for both the open mic and slam is open to anybody, and the winner will receive a cash prize.
Urban Legends Broken Mic is an open mic event that gives poets a chance to share their work in a non-competitive environment. Signup is open to anybody, and performers are given 5 minutes to grace the stage. Each show includes a feature performance by a professional artist, and a spotlight performance from an up-and-coming local performer.
The Urban Legends Womxn's Slam is a poetry competition open to those who identify as women, or with womanhood. There are two preliminary slams during the slam season, and a final slam where top-ranking performers will be invited to compete for a chance to represent Ottawa at the Women of the World Poetry Slam. If any performer would like to qualify for the Womxn's Slam finals, but can't make it to a preliminary bout, they can compete in any other poetry slams in the season, and be sure to self-identify to one of the organisers.
Similar to a poetry slam, a story slam is a storytelling competition. Signup is open to anybody who would like to share two 5-minute stories that relate to a predetermined theme. Judging is handled by the entire audience through a voting system, and the winner will receive a prize package.
